As you enjoy all that the city has to offer, please recognize that the vitality of DC depends on its residents. Nonprofits around the city need your hand, and the local government needs your voice.

Volunteer
DC is filled with volunteer opportunities, whether you’re interested in helping out for a day or every week. Our site can connect you to umbrella organizations with information about thousands of nonprofits looking for volunteers. Also, if you would like to tell DC about your organization, contact us about having a page in this section.

Local Politics
No city in the United States has a governmental structure and history parallel to DC. The history of the DC government is entwined with the federal one. A local government runs the city but Congress maintains (and has exercised) the right to overrule local decisions. Despite our ties to the federal government, residents lack an equal voice in electing that government. To learn more about your government or become involved, check the local politics section.
